Since its beginning, the arena of art jewelry has been a hard field to define.  Just try to describe it to an outsider in three words or less.  Not completely able to fit into categories like “goldsmithing,” “metalsmithing,” or even “mixed media,” I think for the best way to describe the field Dutch Jewelry Designer Ted Noten put it best… with a lot of “ands”.  It is this simple principle that makes the field so invigorating.  Art jewelry embraces ancient methodologies such as; fusing, casting, stone setting and new technologies along with nontraditional processes such as; computer-aided design, laser cutting, and powder coating. It finds inspiration, meaning, and beauty in precious materials like gold and sapphires and non-precious materials like discarded pieces of steel and plastic.  It recognizes wearable and non-wearable jewelry and even virtual jewelry. Art jewelry embraces classically trained makers and individuals who fell into the field by chance.  Because of all these “ands” art jewelry is a constantly evolving organism.  It has been able to shift, grow, and be redefined by individuals who, to simply put it - find inspiration and artistic expression in creating objects to be worn and associated with the body.  Shift: Contemporary Makers That Define, Expand, and Contradict The Field of Art Jewelry is an exhibition that seeks to highlight some of the contemporary makers who through their choice of materials, processes, concepts, and philosophies are defining, expanding and contradicting the field of art jewelry today.
