The Islet Series

The Islet Series is inspired by biological systems and created from both medical data and CAD, promoting the possibilities of expression across different disciplines.

The collected data is transmitted from a continuous glucose monitoring system and wirelessly streamed in 3D modeling software. In the program, the numerical value of the glucose data transforms the physical characteristics and patterns of predetermined infinite three-dimensional form. Thus, the bracelet represents a three-hour collection of blood glucose readings.

The patterning is inspired by the literal definition of Diabetes Mellitus, "siphon honey," which is represented by the use of the hexagonal "honeycomb" to describe a cell shape, a pure and mathematically sound structure for generating form.

The actualized form is sent to a 3D printer and directly manufactured layer by layer until the form has fused in its entirety. The finished ring is then carefully extracted from the printer's bed: much like an archaeologist extracting a fossil from the earth that surrounds the object.

The living blood glucose data becomes a virtually alive form on the screen, actualized, and then sent to the printer.
